Kanpur: High drama unfolded at the Chief Medical Officer's (CMO) office in Kanpur on Wednesday as a tussle over the official chair played out between two claimants to the post -- Dr Hari Dutt Nemi, the previously suspended CMO,and Dr Uday Nath, the incumbent CMO.The ruckus began when Dr Hari Dutt Nemi, the former CMO who was suspended last month, returned to the office at 9.30am and occupied the official CMO chair, citing a stay order from the Allahabad High Court's Lucknow bench. Upon learning of Nemi's return, Dr Uday Nath, the incumbent CMO, arrived at the office, only to find Nemi in the seat. With no resolution in sight, Nath pulled up a nearby chair and began working from it. However, the incident quickly escalated into a heated argument between the two officials. Staff members at the office were visibly divided and the atmosphere remained charged throughout the day.Later, Dr Uday Nath shifted to the additional CMO's room and informed his superiors. According to sources, senior officials advised waiting for official confirmation of the court order, which had yet to reach the health department. Nath clarified that while Dr Nemi had cited the court stay, he failed to follow the necessary administrative protocol by not presenting the order to the principal secretary. "I am the present CMO, duly appointed by the govt," Nath asserted.The dispute originated from a longstanding conflict between Dr Nemi and DM Jitendra Pratap Singh. Dr Nemi was suspended on June 19, following a long-standing conflict with DM Jitendra Pratap Singh. The trouble began in Feb, when the DM, during a surprise inspection, found 34 staff members, including Dr Nemi, absent from the CMO office. He deducted one day's salary and launched further inspections at PHCs and CHCs, citing negligence.Tensions mounted as Nemi failed to act on staff indiscipline and released videos alleging a conspiracy against him. The matter soon turned political, with leaders taking sides -- Assembly Speaker Arun Pathak and MLA Surendra Maithani supporting Nemi, while MLAs Abhijeet Sanga and Mahesh Trivedi backed the DM. Audio recordings and public spats followed, culminating in Nemi's suspension. Challenging the suspension, Dr Nemi approached the Allahabad High Court, which stayed the order on Tuesday, observing that the punishment was disproportionate and no departmental inquiry had been conducted. The court granted the state government four weeks to respond and set August 18 for the next hearing.
