Final hurdle cleared: Musk's Starlink gets space regulator INSPACe's nod for India launch - Times of India

NEW DELHI: In a move that will make the Indian market more competitive for affordable satellite-based internet services, the country's space regulator and promoter Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has granted authorisation to Elon Musk's satcom venture Starlink Satellite Communications Private Ltd for providing satellite communication services. With this authorisation, Starlink has cleared the final hurdle for launch of services in India. Earlier, the company had received a licence to offer satellite services in India from the Department of Telecom (DoT) on June 5, and IN-SPACe's clearance now paves the way for it to start work on setting up ground infrastructure to begin services, possibly over the next few months."IN-SPACe granted authorization to Starlink Satellite Communications Private Ltd (SSCPL) for enabling provisioning of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites constellation, namely Starlink Gen1. IN-SPACe authorization to SSCPL has a validity period of five years from the date of authorisation or end of operational life of Gen1 constellation - whichever is earlier. The roll-out of services is subject to the stipulated regulatory provisions and requisite clearance/approval/license from the relevant government department(s)," the space regulator said.Starlink will now be the third company to receive India's nod to enter the space, with the Union govt previously approving applications by Eutelsat's OneWeb and Reliance Jio to provide services in the country. The affordable satellite-based internet service Starlink is now set to roll out in the country in a few months. In June, Starlink had received approval for three licences -- Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS), Commercial Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT), and Internet Service Provider (ISP) -- after trying for years to get a go-ahead.The Starlink Gen1 Constellation is a global constellation with 4,408 satellites orbiting earth in altitude between 540 and 570 km and capable of providing 600 gbps throughput over India. Starlink currently has a subscriber base of over 5 million customers globally, and is looking to grow this exponentially as it begins services in a telecom-heavy market like India. The company currently operates the world's largest constellation of satellites and its services are already available in several countries, including Mongolia, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Jordan, Yemen, Azerbaijan and Sri Lanka.
