Mumbai: Due to sustained rainfall in the catchment area of Modak Sagar Lake in Shahapur, Thane district, the lake -- one of Mumbai's major water sources -- began overflowing at 6:27 am Wednesday. In previous monsoon seasons, the lake began to overflow on July 25 in 2024 and on July 27 in 2023, indicating an earlier overflow this year.It became the first lake to overflow of seven lakes that supply water to the city. Modak Sagar supplies 440 million litres of water to Mumbai. The city's daily water supply is 3,900 million litres.As of July 9, the seven lakes were holding 10.59 lakh million litres (ML) of water -- 72.61% of the total capacity of 14.47 lakh ML. This marks a sharp increase from the same time last year when the stock was just 20.48%. Mumbai needs 14.47 lakh MLD of water in all the lakes to go without water cuts for the year. tnn
