Liquor shortage to end soon as govt allots 102 shops out of 166 | Ranchi News - Times of India

Ranchi: The ongoing liquor shortage in city shops is expected to end within the next two days, as the handover and takeover process of shops are nearing completion, an excise department official said on Tuesday. The excise department last week started the process of taking over 1,453 liquor shops in the state by the Jharkhand State Beverages Corporation Limited (JSBCL) from private agencies after the completion of the latter's contract period. The department directed JSBCL that the takeover be completed after physical verification of sales and deposits in the presence of a magistrate, representatives of the placement agency and an internal auditor while the entire process is videographed. The shops completing the process have been directed to remain closed until the govt issues new guidelines regarding the operation of the shops.Following this, liquor consumers in the state are facing a frustrating situation as several popular liquor brands of IMFL are currently out of stock at local shops. Despite ready-to-pay, customers are being turned down as shops claim supplies have completely dried up, forcing many to settle for less familiar alternatives or make trips to bordering districts of the state.Ranchi assistant excise commissioner Arun Kumar Mishra said on Tuesday that the handover and takeover process for liquor shops is likely to be completed by Friday. "Of the 166 liquor outlets operating in the city, 102 have already completed the handover/takeover process by Monday. Due to the ongoing process, many shops are currently closed in the city," Mishra added. He further added that after completion of the verification process, liquor shops in the state will be operated by JSBCL itself. "The handover process of the shops to the new operators will also be completed within a week. As of Monday, 10 shops have been handed over and have started their operations. After the exercise, the total number of liquor shops will be decreased, as many shops will merge," the excise official added.Subodh Jaiswal, general secretary of Jharkhand Sharab Vyapari Sangh said the liquor shortage will continue till shops start running smoothly, following completion of the verification process.
