T'puram/Kozhikode: Transport minister KB Ganesh Kumar and Left-affiliated trade unions locked horns over KSRTC's participation in Wednesday's national strike against Centre's 'anti-labour' policies. While the minister said that KSRTC buses will run normally and employees won't take part in the strike, Left unions disagreed and said that KSRTC will actively take part in the protest.LDF convener and CITU state president TP Ramakrishnan rejected Kumar's claim that KSRTC workers had not issued a strike notice and said KSRTC Employees Union had submitted one to the KSRTC MD. "The minister should not have said so. He is not part of KSRTC's management. The strike notice was given to KSRTC's MD not the minister. He did not understand the seriousness of the matter. Someone may have caused a misunderstanding. The strike is against central labour policies which are affecting even KSRTC staff. No KSRTC bus would operate in state on Wednesday. There is no disagreement about taking part in the national strike," he said.Ramakrishnan reiterated that the strike was not about any issue in Kerala but against Centre's anti-worker policies. He said workers in Kerala were happy with the LDF govt's pro-people policies and asked the public not to take out vehicles on Wednesday and shut shops in support of the agitation.Meanwhile, KSRTC management issued a formal memo instructing all employees and officers to report for work on Wednesday. The memo said all unit officers must treat any unauthorized absence on July 9 as 'dies non' (a non-payable day), which would lead to a salary cut from July pay. Officers were told not to leave their headquarters under any circumstance and to ensure that one officer stayed in the office all day.The memo said leave on medical grounds would be allowed only with a certificate from a civil surgeon. Even canteens were ordered to function without interruption and unit heads were instructed to warn owners that failing to run services would result in licence cancellation and blacklisting.These directions indicate that KSRTC management is trying to enforce normalcy and dissuade employees from participating in the strike. "KSRTC employees are satisfied as salaries are credited before the 1st of every month and their health concerns were addressed. There's no reason for them to go on a strike," said Kumar, adding that KSRTC, as a public service, should not stop due to political protests.Kumar said his office had not received any official strike notice and claimed the current work atmosphere in KSRTC left no space for labour unrest. But Left unions produced documents to prove they had sent strike notices earlier. Ramakrishnan said the minister was either misinformed or tried to play down the strike's impact.Whether KSRTC will run normally or come to a halt will become clear only on Wednesday when the nationwide strike begins.
