Jaipur: Senior Congress leader and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot criticised the Bhajan Lal Sharma-led BJP govt in Rajasthan, accusing it of surrendering to the sand mafia and failing to uphold law and order in the state. Speaking on the birth anniversary of senior Congress leader Late Girija Vyas at PCC Tuesday, Gehlot said, "The sand mafia has completely taken over. Sand prices are skyrocketing, and the common man can't even afford to build a home. During our tenure, we faced challenges too, but we tried to control them. Today, it's a free-for-all."He alleged that a deep-rooted nexus now exists from the grassroots to the top, resulting in unchecked violence. "Police are being attacked, people are being run over by trucks, and anyone refusing to align with the mafia is being crushed -- literally. This is not governance, this is lawlessness," he said.Gehlot further questioned chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma's priorities. "What is the point of frequent tours and public visits if there is no governance on the ground? Crimes are happening everyday -- rapes, robberies, thefts. These are burning issues. Why isn't the CM acting?" Criticising administrative inertia, Gehlot noted the delays in implementing officer promotions and appointments. "Promoted officers continue to work on their old posts. IPS officers promoted to DIG are still functioning as SPs. IAS officers faced similar delays. Now that a new DGP is in place, what is stopping the govt?"He further accused the BJP govt of losing grip over public grievance redressal systems and claimed that law and order in the state was deteriorating. "The public doesn't know where to go. Mafia elements are on the rise, and complaints at the thana (police station) level are simply not being heard," he said."The chief minister should deploy his IB discreetly to investigate whether what we are saying is baseless or not. If our concerns hold merit, he should act swiftly to fix them. If not, fine -- we'll accept it was political exaggeration. But it must be verified by his own agencies," he added.
