SFI workers clash with cops at Kerala, Kannur varsities | Thiruvananthapuram News - Times of India

T'puram/Kannur: The SFI marches to the headquarters of Kerala University and Kannur University turned violent on Tuesday. The protesters stormed into the Kerala varsity office, reaching up to the chamber of the vice-chancellor. The protest was organized alleging that the governor, who is also the chancellor of the universities in the state, was saffronising the universities. The protest at Kerala University continued for hours as police remained mute spectators. Even after the SFI workers broke the police barricades and entered the administrative block of the university, police did not try to resist their move. However, police started acting only when the SFI workers tried to barge into the VC's chamber.Later, CPM state secretary M V Govindan himself reached the university headquarters from the AKG Centre to pledge the party's support to the strike. Later, addressing the media, SFI state president Sivaprasad demanded the resignation of the VC and said that the VC would not be allowed to set foot on the university campus. Interestingly, when the hundreds of SFI workers were protesting inside the administrative block of the university headquarters, neither VC Mohan Kunnummel nor the interim VC Ciza Thomas was present on the campus. Only the registrar, Anil Kumar, was present in his chamber.Though police used water cannons to disperse the protesters, their efforts were in vain as the activists barged into the administrative block of the university. The protesters forcefully opened the main door of the administrative block and entered the office. Soon, they reached up to the room of the VC, shouting slogans. Some SFI workers even snatched the lathi from police and charged at them.A large contingent of police was deployed at the VC's office. However, a group of protesters managed to reach near the VC's chamber, bypassing all security hurdles. Later, more police forces were rushed to the varsity headquarters. Govindan said the student community of Kerala would not tolerate RSS politics in the universities. In Kannur, the protesters clashed with police creating a tense situation on the university premises, prompting police to use water cannons multiple times to disperse the agitators. The march, taken out by hundreds of SFI workers, reached the university administrative block around noon. SFI central committee member Bibin Raj inaugurated the protest. Tension escalated after the inauguration when the protesters tried to breach the police barricade. Some SFI activists entered the university premises after breaching the barricade. Agitators destroyed windows of university administrative block. When police tried to take the activists into custody, violent clash erupted between them resulting in injuries to many protesters and police personnel. Though police used water cannons multiple times, the protesters regrouped and tried to destroy police barricade. Police brought the situation under control by arresting and removing many protesters. However, the remaining activists attempted to block the police vehicle carrying the arrested protesters.
