Bhubaneswar: State govt has decided to request the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to provide experts for assessing and cataloguing the jewellery in Puri Jagannath Temple's Ratna Bhandar, after the Archaeological Survey of India's completed repairs of the treasury on Monday.Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan stated that RBI valuers, who possess experience in conducting inventory of ornaments of major temples across India, will be tasked with the Ratna Bhandar's assessment and valuation."We will soon write to the RBI to provide at least two experts. As planned earlier, we will create a digital catalogue of the valuables, highlighting their names, type, weight through proper photography/videography," Harichandan said.Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) acknowledged the complexity of identifying ancient jewellery. SJTA intends to engage goldsmiths, valuers and gemmologists from other states for the work."Our essential task involves accurately identifying the ornaments' characteristics, composition and the verification of precious stones, including diamonds, pearls and rubies," an SJTA official said.During the relocation of valuables to temporary strongrooms inside the shrine in July last year, some ancient idols and war weapons, including swords and javelins, were discovered in the Ratna Bhandar, which the state govt reopened on July 14, 2024, after 46 years.The previous comprehensive inventory of Ratna Bhandar's items occurred between May 13 and July 23, 1978, lasting 70 days. Govt has not yet finalised the timeline for the new audit, which is expected to take place in Aug. Inventories were earlier conducted in 1905 and 1926.The 1978 inventory documented about 128-142kg of gold and 221-244kg of silver in the treasury. They included 367 gold items (necklace, chain, crown, among others) weighing 4,360 bharis (one bhari equals 11.66 grams) and 231 silver items weighing 14,828 bharis in the inner chamber. The outer chamber contained 87 gold items weighing 8,470 bharis and 62 silver items weighing 7,321 bharis."Through a comprehensive inventory, we will be able to compare current articles with the 1978 records. The inventory process will commence after transferring the jewellery from two temporary strongrooms within the temple to the renovated Ratna Bhandar," Harichandan said.
