Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has identified 10 chronic nullah stretches across eight of its 10 zones where citizens are rampantly dumping garbage, nullifying pre-monsoon cleaning efforts and putting thousands of homes at risk of flooding. With 227 open drains spread across the city and rainfall intensifying, NMC officials warn that urban flooding is no longer just a possibility -- it's a man-made inevitability.Despite deploying heavy machines and sanitation teams across key zones, the problem persists. Drains that were desilted only weeks ago are once again clogged with plastic bottles, wrappers, footwear, and kitchen waste thrown recklessly by residents.Currently, cleaning is underway at major drains including Tirpude College to Gudadhe House in Dharampeth, near Adarsh Sanskar School in Hanuman Nagar, Chitnavis Bhavan nullah in Dhantoli, Tajbagh nullah in Nehru Nagar, and the notorious Hattinala in Gandhibagh. In Lakadganj, Dipti Signal Railway Crossing drain is being cleared, while in Ashi Nagar, workers are tackling blockages at the Sai Mandir and North Canal nullahs. CMPD nullah in Mangalwari is also on the radar due to repeated choking.In contrast, Laxmi Nagar and Satranjipura zones report no active cleaning despite being flood-prone. "Some drains are cleaned in the morning and by afternoon, they're stuffed again with garbage," said additional municipal commissioner Vasumana Pant. "This isn't just an issue of manpower or machines -- it's a question of public responsibility. Nagpur's nullahs are not garbage bins."Gandhibagh leads the city with 51 nullahs, followed by Dharampeth (35), Mangalwari (29), Laxmi Nagar and Ashi Nagar (18 each), Nehru Nagar (15), Satranjipura (22), Dhantoli and Hanuman Nagar (14 each) and Lakadganj having 11.Sanitation workers on the ground echo the same frustration.
