Tech snag sparks chaos along Metro 1,train cancellation leads to overcrowding | Mumbai News - Times of India

Mumbai: Peak-hour travel turned into a nightmare for thousands of Metro 1 commuters on Monday as a technical snag forced Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) to withdraw one rake from service, triggering delays and severe overcrowding. The effect of the reduced frequency in terms of crowds was felt at key stations, especially Ghatkopar. The rake was withdrawn while on its way to Ghatkopar from Azad Nagar Metro station around 8.30 am. The trip cancellation caused around 500 additional commuters to accumulate at Ghatkopar and this backlog continued for around 45 minutes.MMOPL said, "Apart from a short-term solution, Mumbai Metro One has submitted a plan to its lenders, National Asset Reconstruction Construction Company Limited (NARCL) through India Debt Resolution Company Limited (IDRCL), for the procurement of additional coaches."The 11.4-km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, which caters to over 5 lakh commuters daily, was left struggling to cope with the passenger load. "The issue arose after one rake showed poor pick-up and had to be taken off the tracks," an MMOPL official said.Social media exploded with angry reactions from commuters and citizen groups. The Andheri Lokhandwala Citizens Association posted on X: "Crazy commuter woes thanks to one service withdrawn due to tech issues. Stampede-like situation in Ghatkopar. @Dev_Fadnavis @CMOMaharashtra act fast before lives are lost. Line 1 needs 6-bogie rakes and 3x the current number."Abhishek Modi, a regular commuter, said, "It's chaos almost every other day. MMOPL is running the show like it's still 2014. It seems they're waiting for a major accident before they take any action."Another commuter, Tarun Purohit, questioned the lack of foresight: "This is one of the most popular routes. The crowds are only increasing. Why is it still a 4-coach train? Are we waiting for a tragedy to happen?"Shweta Iyer, who boards the Metro daily from Western Express Highway, added, "We are paying premium fares for substandard service. If a single train goes out of service, the entire line collapses. This is unacceptable." Commuters are now demanding immediate augmentation of rakes from four to six coaches and an increase in the total number of trains. Several are also calling on the state government to intervene and push MMOPL for urgent upgrades.
