Patna: The six-party Grand Alliance (GA), led by RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, on Monday urged the Election Commission (EC) to either withdraw the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of the state's electoral roll, which began on June 25, or defer the exercise until after the assembly elections scheduled this year."The EC is a constitutional body, but its credibility and impartiality are at stake in the backdrop of the present form of the SIR exercise. Our demand is to honour the aspirations of people, including the poor and migrant workers. The EC should immediately stop the SIR exercise, or to hold it after the assembly elections," Tejashwi said.Tejashwi said the EC on Sunday issued a full-page advertisement in newspapers to put across its position, besides posting two contents on a social media platform at an interval of one hour. It had on June 24 issued a notification regarding conducting the SIR in the state."There are glaring confusions in the newspaper advertisement itself, while the social media posts demand fresh questions. When compared with the June 24 order, the confusion gets more compounded," he said.Tejashwi said the newspaper advertisement, at one point, says that electors should "immediately fill the electors' forms given to them by the booth level officers (BLOs) and submit them to the BLO without attaching the documents asked for. He added while at another point it says that the documents asked for, in any case, have to be attached before July 25. The June 24 guidelines said that one lakh volunteers have been pooled in to support the BLOs, but the July 3 guidelines said four lakh volunteers have been mobilised to serve as support staff. It has not talked about the criteria of their selection. He further pointed out that documents commonly held by the poor -- such as the Aadhaar card, ration card, and MNREGA job card -- are still accepted as valid proof in Form 6 of the Election Commission in other states. However, these have been excluded from the list of 11 acceptable documents that voters in Bihar must submit -- along with a passport-size photograph -- to establish their citizenship while filling out the required form.
