Private bus strike in Kerala today as talks with transport commissioner fail | Thiruvananthapuram News - Times of India

Thiruvananthapuram: The coordination committee of private bus operators has decided to observe a token strike on Tuesday in support of its various demands. This follows the failure of talks held on Monday between transport commissioner Nagaraju Chakilam and committee representatives."The transport commissioner told us that the demand to increase student concession ticket rates must be decided at the govt level. He has sought a week's time to respond after discussing the matter with the govt. He also said another round of discussions would be convened before July 15. While no assurance has been given, we are hopeful that the govt will consider our demands," said T Gopinath, a leader of the Bus Owners' Association. The private bus operators have announced an indefinite strike starting July 22 if their demands are not met by then. Association leaders said they had been seeking a revision of the student concession rate, currently fixed at Re 1, for the past 13 years. They also alleged that the issue of fake concession cards remains unresolved."Even though we have repeatedly raised our grievances, the govt has not even cared to hold a discussion with us so far. It was only after the strike notice was issued that the govt agreed to talks," Gopinath said.Other demands raised by the operators include an end to "unnecessary penalisation" of buses under various fines. They have also objected to the govt's alleged refusal to renew permits for buses operating beyond 140km. A large number of people have lost their jobs due to permit cancellations, they said. Additionally, they have demanded the withdrawal of the requirement for bus employees to obtain police clearance certificates.
