Patiala: Punjab's electricity demand soared to an all-time high on Saturday, crossing 17,233 MW for the first time, as the state battled sweltering temperatures and a surge in agricultural load from paddy transplantation.The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) said the spike, driven by extreme heat and humidity, marked the highest ever recorded load in the state's history -- surpassing the previous day's record of 16,983 MW and the earlier peak of 16,800 MW logged in June. To meet the demand, Punjab drew more than 10,600 MW from the northern power grid, while generating 6,560 MW from internal sources. All state thermal power units were operating at full capacity, officials said.State-owned thermal power plants contributed 1,968 MW, while private thermal stations at Rajpura and Talwandi Sabo added another 3,100 MW. Hydroelectric output totaled 1,048 MW, with the Ranjit Sagar dam alone generating 550 MW from its four active units. Despite these efforts, a senior PSPCL engineer in Patiala admitted there was still a 1,000 to 1,200 MW gap between restricted and unrestricted demand. "We're managing the grid extremely well under these extraordinary circumstances," he said.The Northern Regional Load Dispatch Centre (NRLDC) reported the state's power requirement on Friday to have fluctuated between 12,000 and 17,000 MW, with a total supply of 3,448 lakh units. PSPCL has ramped up power procurement from external sources and is optimising local generation to prevent outages and stabilise the grid.
