Nagpur: While opting for CBSE is almost a fad in Nagpur, it seems for Class 12, Maharashtra's state board could give students an added advantage. The state board allows students to appear for Class 12 supplementary exams even if they have failed in multiple subjects -- unlike CBSE, which restricts supplementary exams to only one subject, and imposes an 'essential repeat' rule if a student fails in more than one subject.Under the CBSE system, students failing in more than one subject in Class 12 are marked as essential repeaters, requiring them to reappear for all subjects in the next academic cycle. Supplementary exams are permitted for only one subject in any year, meaning students who fail multiple subjects have no choice but to lose the academic year. While CBSE allows up to three compartment attempts, these are limited to one subject per attempt. Students failing in two or more subjects in Class 12 must retake all papers the following year. CBSE has declared July 15 as the single date for all Class 12 supplementary exams this year.Explaining the rationale, a senior CBSE school principal said, "Actually in Class 12, a student gets compartment if he or she fails in one subject only. A student failing in two subjects falls in the essential repeat category, and needs to appear in the next year's summer exam. In Class 10, compartment is allowed up to two subjects, but if a student fails in three subjects, it is essential repeat."In contrast, the Maharashtra state board allows students to appear for supplementary exams in all failed subjects during the June-July cycle of the same academic year. This policy was further expanded in 2025, allowing even those who missed the main exams to apply for supplementary tests, enabling students to clear their HSC without delaying their higher education plans.Ashok Gavhankar, general secretary of the Vidarbha Junior College Teachers Association, said, "The state board allows students to appear for all failed subjects in supplementary exams so that their university admissions are not impacted. Students can potentially save their entire academic year if they clear the HSC board exam in supplementary."
