J&K on path of socio-economic, political transformation: Omar

Irfan Tramboo Srinagar, July 4: Urging graduates to help shape a "new story," Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said that Jammu and Kashmir is on the path of economic, social and political transformation. Follow the Daily Excelsior channel on WhatsApp Addressing students at the 6th Convocation of SKUAST-K, Omar emphasized the need to bridge science and society, not just to seek jobs, but to create them. "J&K is undergoing a transformation, economically, socially, and politically. Help us shape this new story, not through slogans but through service, not through entitlement but through excellence," he said. Click here to watch video The Chief Minister, who also serves as the Pro-Chancellor of the University, called on the youth to become the architects of a new J&K. He urged graduates to be bold in their ideas, to create opportunities, build agri-startups, and always carry J&K in their hearts. "You are trained to bridge science and society. Never forget your land, wherever you go. As you rise, let others rise with you. Carry J&K in your heart and contribute to a peaceful, prosperous future," he said. Omar noted that SKUAST-K was born from a vision to empower the youth of J&K through agriculture, science, and innovation. He emphasized that the University is not just producing graduates, but problem-solvers for the grassroots. "That vision, inspired by the ideals of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, finds expression in every lab, lecture hall, and field experiment you've taken part in. Over the years, SKUAST has grown into a centre of excellence and made significant contributions." He lauded the university's achievements in high-altitude farming, temperate horticulture, animal husbandry, and organic agriculture. "This university has not only produced scholars, but also field-level innovators who are solving real challenges faced by our farmers," he added. The Chief Minister said agriculture remains the backbone of J&K's economy, culture, and identity, and must evolve to meet future challenges. In this transformation, he said, young scientists and graduates have a vital role to play. "The agriculture of yesterday cannot meet the challenges of tomorrow. We face climate change, land degradation, and market volatility. And we must meet the aspirations of a generation that wants to thrive." He urged graduates to seize the growing opportunities in agri-tech and horticulture, with support now available for hundreds of start-ups. "If you have an idea, we will fund it. If you have a plan, we will partner with you. The world needs your knowledge, your compassion, your courage, and your character." Highlighting reforms in the sector, Omar said the Government has launched a Rs 5,000 crore Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP), aimed at integrating science, finance, and governance. This initiative, he explained, seeks to transform agriculture into a high-value, tech-enabled, and resilient sector through financial inclusion and scientific innovation. He said 29 transformative projects are being rolled out under HADP, including high-density apple and walnut plantations, modern sheep husbandry clusters, revival of saffron cultivation, dairy modernization, and agribusiness and value-chain development for rural employment. "Our focus is on precision farming, post-harvest management, and leveraging data to enhance productivity and market access," he said, calling on graduates to act as bridges between research institutions and farming communities. Promoting innovation in agriculture, he challenged the students: "Can you double the income of our small farmers? Can you design solutions for climate-smart agriculture? Can you build agri-enterprises that generate rural jobs? If yes, then know this, you will never walk alone. The Government of Jammu and Kashmir will stand firmly with you." Using the metaphor of a seed, the Chief Minister stressed on purpose and perseverance. "A seed faces darkness and resistance. Yet it grows into a tree that offers shade, fruit, and shelter. Plant yourself in the right place. Water your dreams with effort. The world will benefit from your growth."
