Govt form model code of conduct for college teachers | Chennai News - Times of India

Chennai: Tamil Nadu higher education department has released a draft model code of conduct for college teachers. This will help colleges and universities develop their own specific guidelines for teachers on posting videos and posts on social media."Maintain professionalism on social media, refraining from posts or comments that could harm the institution's reputation," said the code released by the TN State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE) on social media ethics. Teachers can provide their feedback on the draft policy through email at tansche_edu@yahoo.co.in on or before July 26."For example, teachers can make reels about the lessons and innovative teaching practices. However, these reels should not affect any religious sentiment or be self-promoting," said M P Vijayakumar, vice-chairman of TANSCHE.The model policy will serve as a reference point on code of conduct for teachers for colleges and universities."It is up to the individual college or university to make detailed guidelines to promote the responsible use of technology," he said. Regarding personal conduct, the draft policy asked teachers to manage private affairs in a manner consistent with the dignity of the profession. It also discouraged teachers from active participation in politics. "Refrain from active participation in politics that may cause interference in professional duties. Do not associate with movements or organisations that are subversive of law and order or against the interests of higher education," it said. The policy also urged teachers to refrain from activities that promote hatred or enmity among different communities, religions, or linguistic groups. It asked teachers to work towards national integration and uphold the ideals of democracy, patriotism, and peace. On teacher-student relationships, the policy asked teachers to respect the 'right and dignity of the student in expressing his or her opinion.' It also emphasised treating all students equally and highlighted the need for the privacy of student information, including academic records and personal details. "Establish professional boundaries with students, colleagues, and staff, avoiding exploitation or favouritism," the policy said. The policy also urged teachers to avoid any form of harassment or unfair treatment on grounds of caste, religion, gender, physical, social, economic, or political characteristics. It asked teachers to evaluate student performance impartially in tests and exams. The draft also asked teachers to uphold standards in research by avoiding plagiarism and data manipulation.
