Pune: The demand for tankers across PMC areas continues to be high despite good rainfall and an increase in water level of four dams from which water is supplied to civic areas. According to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)'s water department, the civic areas recorded around 40,000 to 45,000 tanker trips per month during April-May peak summer season, which went down only by around 10% in June. The civic areas registered 37,000 tanker trips in June, even after early onset of monsoon and increased water storage. Residents said PMC must prioritise completion of water supply infrastructure. Many areas receive contaminated water. Despite paying high property tax, people are left with no option but to source water from tankers.The four dams -- Khadakwasla, Temghar, Varasgaon, and Panshet -- that provide water to civic areas had around 16.7 TMC of water on Thursday, which was three times more compared to last year's stock during the same period. These dams had 4.7 TMC of water last year. "The administration is trying to improve the distribution system. After the infrastructure is built, we will see a decline in demand. Issues regarding water quality can be resolved accordingly," said Nandkishor Jagtap, head of PMC's water supply department.Residents of merged villages said they are waiting for water even after years of merger. The administration has failed to complete the works, and this has led to water shortage in many areas. "The civic administration has made a lot of promises about reviving pending projects and completing them. But these promises have not been fulfilled. The civic body is not ready to offer any major relief to us in property tax, so it should make sure that adequate facilities are provided to us," said Shriang Chavan of Dhayari.Several residents of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad rely on tankers. Citizens are forced to pay heavy charges for tankers, ranging from Rs800 to Rs2,500 per tanker. Increase in construction activities across civic areas has led to a significant rise in demand for water tankers. Civic data shows that consumers source tanker water not only in summer but throughout the year.Residents said the tankers are operated by people who wield political influence. "They not only create hurdles in developing water supply infrastructure, but are involved in water theft as well. They help in providing illegal water taps and water connections. This ultimately leads to shortage of water in many areas," "Our tanker providers have made annual contracts with us. If we have to get water in summer, we need to hire tankers even during monsoon when the demand for tanker water is less," said a resident of Nagar Road.PMC officials said around 100 private tankers on contract provide services through the civic administration. They are monitored by PMC. The civic administration has ten tanker points, of which seven are operating. Apart from those associated with PMC, some tanker owners do independent business. The number of these private tankers, which lift water from other sources, like private wells or borewells, is around 450. They lift water from 20 to 30 different private water supply points. The civic administration does not have any record of these private tankers.The fringe areas like Bavdhan Budruk, Kondhawe-Dhawade, New Kopare, Shivane, Kirkatwadi, Nandoshi, Uttamnagar, Narhe, Dhayari, Ambegaon, Sus, Mhalunge, Wagholi, Uruli, and Phursungi face serious water crisis during summer.
