The National Medical Commission warns Indian students about foreign private medical colleges not meeting NMC regulations. In 2021, the NMC introduced the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiates (FMGL) Regulations, which set clear guidelines for students seeking to pursue medical degrees outside India. According to these regulations, foreign medical graduates will not be granted registration to practice in India unless they complete a medical degree that lasts a minimum of 54 months, alongside an internship of at least 12 months. Furthermore, the NMC specifies that both the course and the internship must be undertaken at the same foreign medical institution throughout the entire duration of study. This means no part of the medical education or internship can be done in India or in any other country. The NMC's regulation aims to ensure that students receive a comprehensive and standardized education that aligns with the required medical training and practices in India. The commission has expressed concern over this trend, particularly as students may be unknowingly jeopardizing their future medical careers. The NMC has made it clear that any deviations from the prescribed course duration, syllabus, medium of instruction, clinical training, or internship may result in disqualification from receiving registration in India. One of the major challenges students face in foreign medical institutions is the language barrier, as some colleges offer courses in their native language, making it difficult for students to fully grasp the medical content. This issue can severely impact the quality of education, leading to potential obstacles in securing a valid medical license in India. In light of these concerns, the NMC has urged students to thoroughly research and select foreign medical colleges that comply with the established regulations to avoid complications in the future.
