Bengaluru, July 4 (UNI) The Karnataka High Court today quashed a sexual assault case filed against Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan by an aspiring male actor who had accused him of unnatural sex in 2012. The court's decision came after serious factual inconsistencies were raised in the complaint, including a glaring discrepancy regarding the location of the alleged incident. Justice SR Krishna Kumar allowed the petition filed by Balakrishnan, seeking to quash the FIR that was registered under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, dealing with unnatural offences, and Section 66E of the Information Technology Act, which relates to privacy violations. A copy of the detailed ruling is awaited. Appearing for the filmmaker, Senior Advocate Prabhuling Navadgi argued that the allegations were fabricated and lacked credibility. He pointed out that the incident was allegedly said to have occurred at the Taj Hotel near the Bengaluru International Airport in 2012, but the hotel itself had opened only in 2016 -- four years later -- rendering the complaint factually impossible. This aspect had earlier led another bench, presided over by Justice M Nagaprasanna, to stay proceedings against the filmmaker, citing both the implausibility of the timeline and the complainant's 12-year delay in filing the case. The complainant, an aspiring actor, claimed that Balakrishnan had invited him to the fourth floor of the hotel where the assault allegedly took place. He provided a detailed description of the incident in his complaint, following which Balakrishnan was booked and a formal case registered. The filmmaker later approached the High Court through advocate Joseph Anthony, seeking to have the FIR quashed. With today's ruling, the High Court effectively closed the case, calling into question the credibility of the allegations made and offering relief to the veteran filmmaker. UNI BDN PRS
