Ludhiana: Sanjeev Arora, who was sworn in as industries minister on Thursday, became the first minister from Ludhiana in the current state cabinet. With this, the number of ministers from the district in the cabinet has risen to three. Last September, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government inducted five ministers, including two from the district -- Sahnewal MLA Hardeep Singh Mundian and Khanna MLA Tarunpreet Singh Sond.In the previous Congress government, Bharat Bhushan Ashu was minister till early 2022. After that, there was no cabinet minister from Ludhiana area for over three years, even though all the MLAs were from the ruling party.After his induction into the state cabinet, Sanjeev Arora now faces the weight of expectation. Narinder Singh Masson, a voter from Ludhiana West and resident of Shaheed Karnail Singh Nagar, said that people have high hopes from Sanjeev Arora, who also worked in the city as Rajya Sabha member."The party has to fulfil the promises made by the AAP leadership during bypoll campaigning. It is not just Ludhiana West. All of Ludhiana has expectations from him. We want smoother traffic, a crime-free city, and a solution to waterlogging issues," said Narinder Singh, a vocal resident who knows about the political landscape of Ludhiana. He added that the party's performance on all the eight seats from urban areas of Ludhiana would depend on how Arora did as minister. Arvind Sharma, a resident of SBS Nagar, attributed Arora's victory to his development-oriented image. "Even after slight rainfall, the city gets waterlogged, so that issue needs to be addressed. Also, the minister should work on transforming the city into a smart city with better roads, an advanced sewerage system, etc. Also, he should work on a solution to pollution in Buddha Nullah, which is a blot on the city," said Sharma, who is an RTI activist.Meanwhile, AAP leaders assured that the promises made to Ludhiana residents would be fulfilled.
