Lucknow: A day after 42-year-old Jagdeep Kumar brutally murdered his elderly in-laws in Gadhi Kanora under the Alambagh police station limits, his wife -- the sole eyewitness -- broke down while recalling the chilling sequence of events. Poonam Devi, estranged from the accused for nearly two years, said she watched helplessly as her husband slit the throats of her father, Anant Ram (73) -- a retired railway employee -- and her mother, Asha Devi (71). "He called me and said he wanted to meet the kids and assured me he wasn't drunk. After some time, he came to our house with a bag and asked me to return to him. But suddenly, he covered my father's mouth and slit his throat. When my mother rushed in to intervene, he slit her throat as well," said Poonam on Thursday. Hearing screams, neighbours rushed to the scene. One of the tenants, Dharmshila Devi, said, "I heard her calling for help and came downstairs. I saw them lying in a pool of blood. Jagdeep ran at me with the knife too, but I managed to escape. Locals caught him while he was trying to flee and handed him over to the police."According to the police, Jagdeep arrived at the house around 9pm on Wednesday under the pretext of meeting his children. The couple had separated following multiple instances of domestic abuse and threats. Poonam, a primary school teacher in Mohanlalganj, had been staying at her parents' home.Police said that after a verbal exchange with his in-laws regarding Poonam's return, Jagdeep grew agitated and attacked Anant Ram with a knife concealed in his bag. When Asha Devi rushed in to intervene, he turned on her and killed her in front of their daughter.DCP Central Ashish Srivastava confirmed that Jagdeep was arrested and sent to jail. "The murder weapon has been recovered. We are investigating whether this was a premeditated act. The eyewitness testimony is critical and adds significant weight to the case," he said. Family members said Poonam had recently filed a formal complaint against Jagdeep for harassment but had agreed to let him visit their child in hopes of maintaining some peace. "She thought he might behave for the sake of their child. She never imagined it would end like this," said her sister-in-law.
