Guwahati: Ratul Das, caretaker of a 72-year-old woman who was hacked to death on Tuesday night, was arrested after he confessed to the crime, DCP (Central) Amitabh Basumatary said on Thursday.A mason by profession, Ratul had been working as Bandana Das's caretaker for about a year. However, he did not think twice before hacking the elderly woman to death with a sharp sickle, after Das denied giving him the money he sought.Ratul, who was detained on Wednesday after Bandana's blood-soaked body was recovered, confessed before the police that he committed the crime, Basumatary said. Following his confession, Ratul was arrested.The DCP said as per the accused's confession, he entered the deceased's room by climbing the wall around midnight on Tuesday and then killed her. Though the accused initially tried to cover up the crime, the DCP said a fresh cut injury on his finger, sustained during the act, served as the key clue that led the police to suspect him."After committing the crime, he disposed of the murder weapon behind the house and threw his blood-stained vest in a drain to destroy evidence. He attempted to stage the crime scene to make it look like an outsider had broken in," Basumatary added.On Thursday morning, police took Ratul to the crime scene, where he helped them recover the murder weapon. The police officer said during interrogation, the accused said he was under the influence of alcohol when he committed the crime."He also alleged that he was frequently verbally abused by the victim and denied money when he asked for it, which triggered his rage. However, further interrogation and investigation will reveal the motive behind the crime and the involvement of a third person in the crime, if any," the DCP said.Bandana's body was recovered by the police at around 7:30 am in a locked room on Wednesday. Police were informed by the younger brother of the deceased, who lives about one km away, after he was informed by the caretaker about the discovery of Bandana's body lying on the floor.
