"The Karnataka Misinformation and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025, introduced by the state government, aims to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media by criminalising offenders. Many people fall victim to fake news on social media, often believing and sharing unverified information without fact-checking. As part of a crackdown on fake news 'Misinformation and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025'has been introduced by the Karnataka government. "The Karnataka Misinformation and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025, introduced by the state government, aims to curb the spread of fake news and misinformation on social media by criminalising offenders. According to the state government's draft proposal, placed before the cabinet in mid-June, the government aims to criminalise and penalise those who spread misinformation. The law is not just limited to individuals; Companies and social media platforms may also be held accountable for fake news shared through their networks. Social media users found guilty of spreading misinformation may face imprisonment ranging from two to five years. In more serious cases, such as posting fake news, the punishment can extend up to seven years in jail along with a fine of up to ₹10 lakh. Besides, those who abet such offences may also face a two-year prison term. The draft bill includes formulating a six-member 'fake news regulatory authority.' The committee will be responsible for tracking and regulating the content posted on social media platforms. The bill also proposes a ban on content that disrespects symbols associated with Sanatan traditions and prohibits the promotion of superstition. Currently, social media regulation falls under the jurisdiction of the Central government through the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000 and the IT Rules, 2021. If passed, Karnataka would become the first state to introduce criminal penalties specifically targeting fake news.
