Keonjhar: Three persons died when an illegal manganese quarry collapsed under incessant rain in Keonjhar district on Tuesday evening. The incident took place near Bichakundi village in Baitarani reserve forest under Joda police station limits.The deceased were identified as Sandeep Purti (25), Guru Champia (18) and Kande Munda (19), all residents of Bichakundi village. The victims were daily wage labourers engaged in illegal manganese extraction from the Dalpahar mine.According to the police, continuous rainfall over the past few days had loosened the soil in the mining area and the victims got trapped when a portion of the mine suddenly caved in. A rescue operation was launched immediately, but the recovery of bodies was delayed due to adverse weather conditions."The incident happened when they were extracting manganese from the forest area. Further investigation is underway," Sushanta Pradhan, inspector in-charge of Joda police station, said.The bodies were recovered after an eight-hour rescue operation and sent to Joda medical centre for post-mortem. Champua range officer Akshay Chhatria said investigation is underway.Sources alleged that mineral mafias exploit poor locals to illegally extract iron and manganese ore, which is then transported to industries within and outside the state. This illegal activity not only results in significant revenue loss for the govt, but also poses a serious threat to the local biodiversity.Divisional forest officer (Keonjhar) Dhanraj H D said, "We are verifying the claims about illegal mining in the reserve forest and have ordered local officials to investigate the incident. Many a times locals, mostly tribals, collect lumps manually for livelihood. No machines are used to extract minerals, but locals collect the floating ores in sacks and sell them.
