OpenAI's unreleased Sora video generation tool was leaked by a group of beta testers on Tuesday, prompting the company to immediately suspend all user access to the platform. Reports indicate that the artists, identifying themselves as "Sora PR Puppets," created a public interface that allowed anyone to generate AI videos using OpenAI's advanced text-to-video technology. The leak lasted approximately three hours before OpenAI intervened. In an open letter published on Hugging Face, the artists launched a scathing critique of OpenAI's early access program. "DEAR CORPORATE AI OVERLORDS," the letter began, "We received access to Sora with the promise to be early testers, red teamers and creative partners. However, we believe instead we are being lured into 'art washing' to tell the world that Sora is a useful tool for artists." The group dramatically declared: "ARTISTS ARE NOT YOUR UNPAID R&D" and emphasized they are not "free bug testers, PR puppets, training data, validation tokens." Reports suggest the artists were particularly frustrated with OpenAI's content approval requirements, which mandate that every generated video must be approved by the OpenAI team before sharing. This restriction, combined with what they perceive as minimal compensation, drove their protest. OpenAI has not yet confirmed the authenticity of the leak. Niko Felix, an OpenAI spokesperson, responded that participation in the Sora preview is voluntary, with "no obligation to provide feedback or use the tool." The company stressed that hundreds of artists have helped shape Sora's development and that they will continue supporting artists through grants and events. The leaked Sora interface allowed users to generate 10-second videos up to 1080p resolution, with most outputs bearing OpenAI's distinctive visual watermark. The artists' goal was to draw attention to what they see as exploitative practices by a company valued at $150 billion. "We are sharing this to the world in the hopes that OpenAI becomes more open, more artist friendly and supports the arts beyond PR stunts," the group's letter concluded. Sora, first teased in February, remains unreleased. Former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati previously indicated the tool would be available by year's end, in order on addressing potential global impacts with election all around the world earlier in the year. However, after the leak, OpenAI had suspended access to Sora for all early access participants.
