NOIDA: Bhim Singh, who was kidnapped as a nine-year-old boy and confined at an animal farm as a slave, cut off from all external contact, for three decades before being rescued last week, may find his reintegration bewildering and requires a thorough assessment, psychologists TOI spoke to on Thursday said. Their opinion came with a rider - that it was an analysis based on what they had heard and read, and no concrete evaluation is possible without an in-person meeting. But given years of confinement and torture and the terrible isolation that he experienced, Bhim could be experiencing the effects of prolonged sensory deprivation that complete disconnection from society can cause. He would likely have been "awestruck" when he was rescued, an awe not of wonder but an overwhelming inability to process the changes around him, said a Delhi-based psychologist. Emerging from such extreme isolation is akin to waking up in a different century, the experts said, because it creates a cognitive overload where the brain struggles to reconcile past experiences with present realities. "Every human being relies on predictability to feel safe. When that predictability is snatched away, even in a seemingly safe environment, the mind interprets it as danger. He needs to build trust and everyone around him, including his family and peers, need to be patient with him," the psychologist said. "In 30 years, the world has progressed in many ways. Entering this reality, which is routine and a familiar space for others, is alienation for him." "Our brain works on sensory stimulations. There are senses or stimuli such as vision, hearing, olfaction, and so on. When we go for long periods without seeing or sensing any specific objects, we may struggle with orientation when exposed to them again," explained Dr Nand Kumar, professor of psychiatry at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). "Prolonged exposure to a particular stimulus can lead to what is known as 'conditioned memory', where the brain might also stop recognising certain objects or experiences. In such cases, people may experience hallucinations or memory-fade. This is influenced by a person's past routine-such as their daily interactions, environment, and activities over the past 30 years. It closely resembles the effects of prolonged sensory deprivation," he added. Dr. Aditi Agrawal, a consultant psychiatrist, said, "For three decades, Bhim Singh was completely disconnected from the outside world, missing out on social relationships, emotional comfort, and technological changes. This deprivation has robbed him of experiences essential for adapting to life. The prolonged torture, fear, and yearning for his family may have given way to deep hopelessness." Bhim could also be feeling the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is marked by flashbacks, nightmares and emotional numbness, because of decades of isolation, beatings and deprivation, compounded by extreme loneliness. "When an individual is subjected to such prolonged torture, the mind develops coping mechanisms that can hinder reintegration into normal life. Even a friendly interaction can trigger memories of abuse. However, it can be concluded only after a clinical assessment," said Dr Yogendra Singh, a senior psychiatrist at Fortis Hospital, Noida. "Some precautionary steps which his family can take is to give him time and space to build the trust which he might have lost and not overwhelm him with a lot of stimuli. Consultation with a mental health professional can help them better understand his mental state," Aggarwal added. Asked if govt would step in and offer help to Bhim's family, health department officials in Ghaziabad, where the family is based, said no such instructions had come to them. "If we receive an order, we will conduct a clinical assessment," chief medical officer Akhilesh Mohan told TOI.
