Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu All Entrepreneurs Federation on Tuesday urged the state govt to withdraw the electricity tariff hike immediately to save the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Pointing out that 46,45,867 people were employed by the MSMEs in Tamil Nadu, representatives of the federation said 11.69 lakh of them were in the manufacturing sector and the remaining 33.76 lakh in the service sector. They said the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board had increased the electricity tariff and other ancillary charges by 59.61% in the past three years, ignoring opposition from the consumers. "It has affected several thousands of entrepreneurs and the percentage of people starting businesses in the manufacturing sector is decreasing significantly."They said the chief ministers of northern states were inviting the entrepreneurs from Tamil Nadu to start their businesses in their states."Industrialists in Tamil Nadu have requested chief minister M K Stalin to withdraw the electricity tariff hike immediately. Otherwise, the govt should come forward to bear the tariff on behalf of the MSMEs. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board should not function against the welfare of the entrepreneurs in the state," said M Jayabal, state general secretary of the federation.
