CHENNAI: Chief minister M K Stalin transferred the Sivaganga custodial death case probe to CBI on Tuesday after the state govt came under sharp criticism from the high court and opposition parties.Stalin also spoke to the family of Ajith Kumar, 27, the custodial death victim, and apologised to them. "Romba sorry ma," he told Malathi, the mother of Ajith Kumar over the phone. Ajith Kumar, a security guard at Bathrakaliamman temple in Madapuram near Tiruppuvanam in TN's Sivaganga district, was picked up as a suspect on June 27 by policemen in a gold jewellery theft case. He died in police custody the next day. "I have assured them that a fair, transparent, and unbiased investigation will be conducted and that strict action will be taken against those responsible, ensuring justice for Ajithkumar's grieving family,'' Stalin said in a statement.Stalin stated the state govt would extend full cooperation for the CBI probe said such an incident should never happen again anywhere in future. The transfer of probe to CBI, within a day after it was shifted to CB- CID came after opposition leaders including AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami placed the demand. The state govt also shunted out Sivaganga SP and suspended the Manamadurai DSP.Stalin said the Madurai Bench of the Madras high court has stated that the CB-CID may continue the investigation in this case."However, considering the serious charges against five police personnel, and to eliminate any suspicion regarding the investigation, I have ordered that the case be transferred to the CBI," he said.The development comes on a day when a video of Ajith Kumar being assaulted by policemen in civilian clothes in a shed behind a temple surfaced.Stalin said he has repeatedly emphasised that police personnel must uphold human rights during their investigations. Stalin said he will never tolerate such violations or misconduct."What certain police officers have done at Thiruppuvanam is unforgivable. I warn that such acts must never be carried out again, anywhere, at any time, by anyone,'' he said.Stalin said he was deeply distressed upon learning about the custodial assault on Ajith Kumar by police personnel, which led to his death. "This is an inexcusable act that cannot be justified," he said.Explaining the action taken by the govt, Stalin said six police personnel were immediately suspended on the day of the occurrence itself, five of them were arrested and a murder case was filed on them. Subsequently, Today, the Superintendent of Police of the concerned district has been transferred to the waiting list, and the Deputy Superintendent of Police has been suspended. Legal actions are being taken continuously in accordance with the law.Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu cooperation minister KR Periyakaruppan, along with Sivagangai collector K Porkodi and other officials visited the house of Ajith Kumar and consoled the family members including his brother Naveen Kumar and mother Malathi.
