Srinagar- In response to heightened security concerns, authorities have put in place an elaborate multi-tiered security framework for the annual Amarnath Yatra, which begins July 3. The joint efforts of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Army, CRPF, BSF, ITBP, and SDRF aim to ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage for thousands of devotees arriving from across the country. Jammu Police have established joint checkpoints across strategic locations, including key stretches of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44). Daily anti-sabotage checks and frisking operations are being carried out to prevent any untoward incident. To further bolster surveillance, facial recognition systems (FRS) have been installed along the Pahalgam route to detect and flag potential threats in real-time. The CRPF has deployed drone defense systems and K-9 squads, with vulnerable areas like Udhampur and Ramban receiving heightened focus. Meanwhile, BSF personnel are on high alert along the 200-km International Border from Akhnoor to Kathua. The area is under a three-tier security mechanism involving the BSF, Army, and local police to pre-empt cross-border threats. A key safety feature introduced this year is the mandatory RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tracking for all pilgrims, allowing real-time monitoring of their movement. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, DGP J-K Nalin Prabhat and other senior officers from the police and civil administration, and senior officials of Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), an official spokesman said. Sinha directed the officials to spread the traffic advisory widely so that common man is not inconvenienced during the 38-day pilgrimage that starts on Thursday. The lieutenant governor took a comprehensive review of the traffic and security management and all the arrangements in place by the stakeholder departments for the smooth, safe and hassle-free holy pilgrimage, the spokesperson said. District administrations, SSPs, traffic police and stakeholder departments should work in close coordination to ensure movement of pilgrims in designated convoys and smooth implementation of the traffic plan, the LG said.
