New Delhi: Indian Railways has implemented a rationalized fare structure for passenger trains starting today, July 1, 2025. The move, aimed at simplifying fare calculations and improving the financial health of passenger services, introduces a nominal hike for most long-distance journeys while keeping short-distance and suburban travel rates untouched. A Breakdown of the New Fares For Mail and Express trains, the basic fare has been increased by 1 paisa per kilometre for all non-AC classes, including Second Class and Sleeper Class. Fares for all AC classes, such as AC Chair Car, AC 3-Tier, and AC 2-Tier, will see a rise of 2 paise per kilometre. This revision applies to all premium services like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Vande Bharat, and Duronto. For ordinary non-AC passenger trains, there is no price change for journeys up to 500 km, but a nominal flat increase will be applied for longer distances: ₹5 for 501-1500 km, ₹10 for 1501-2500 km, and ₹15 for trips between 2501 and 3000 km. What Remains Unchanged The Ministry of Railways has confirmed that there is no increase in the fares for suburban train services or for season tickets on both suburban and non-suburban routes. Furthermore, ancillary charges like reservation fees, superfast surcharges, and other fees will remain the same, with GST applied as per existing rules. Tickets that were booked before July 1, 2025, will remain valid at the old rates, and passengers will not be required to pay the difference.
