Nagpur: Even as MSEDCL completed installing 2.51 lakh smart meters in the district, the opposition to the new meters is growing. Two different protests were carried out at separate locations in the district against the smart meter installation.Members of Vidarbha Rajya Andolan Samiti (VRAS) set fire to a replica of a smart meter at Variety Chowk on Monday, warning the state govt to stop installing meters without public consent. The protest turned tense as police detained several activists after clashes broke out during the demonstration.According to VRAS, MSEDCL is replacing existing meters in Nagpur city and surrounding rural areas without prior notice to consumers. Though the company claims these are 'Time of Day' (TOD) meters, VRAS alleges it's a deliberate cover-up to mask the installation of smart prepaid meters, a move they argue is driven by corporate interests."Smart meters from private companies are being pushed, without calibration certificates or testing reports, and consumers are already getting inflated bills," said Mukesh Masurkar, youth wing head of VRAS. The samiti claims that over 14.5 lakh consumers in Nagpur are targeted for this covert meter swap, backed by heavy industrial investment aimed at recovering profits at the public's expense.The protest turned chaotic as demonstrators raised slogans. A verbal clash with police broke out, leading to the temporary detention of several activists. Some members attempted to block the road before being taken to Sitabuldi police station. They were released after a few hours.Another major protest was staged in the Wadoda-Bidgaon area, where citizens gathered at the sub-divisional MSEDCL office on Sunday to oppose the installation of smart meters. Residents alleged that a private agency has been carrying out meter replacement without any prior notice or consent from consumers. Protesters claimed that unknown individuals, sometimes even minors, have been going door to door replacing old electricity meters with new smart meters, despite there being no complaints or reported faults. No written communication or public announcement was made by MSEDCL before the rollout, they claimed.Locals claimed that around 90% of households in Wadoda village received inflated bills, with significant discrepancies between the readings of the old meters and the new smart meters. Many also pointed out that the bills were substantially higher than those received during the same period last year.
