Shimla: Landslides and shooting stones kept the Chandigarh-Manali national highway blocked for several hours between Mandi and Manali as heavy rainfall threw life out of gear in many parts of Himachal Pradesh on Monday. The highway was closed at a number of locations, including near Thalout, Larji, and 9 Mile in Mandi district, forcing the local administration to divert Manali and Mandi-bound traffic via link roads. At Thalout, a landslide blocked the road near the exit point of a tunnel, disrupting traffic for more than two hours. A landslide had blocked the highway for around a week at the same location during the 2023 monsoon. At nearby Dwara, a massive landslide closed the highway for around two hours in the afternoon and a huge traffic jam was witnessed on both sides of the road. The police officials also halted traffic movement due to reports of shooting stones from several locations along the highway, including 4 Mile, 7 Mile, 9 Mile, and Dwara, which fall in a landslide-prone zone. All the blocked stretches of the highway were reopened for traffic at around 3 pm. However, disruptions continued due to the slow movement of the vehicles."The highway got blocked near 9 Mile late Sunday night due to a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall. By the time the landslide debris was cleared in the morning hours, there were more landslides and incidents of shooting stones; that's why it took time to restore the traffic movement," said an official of the local administration.Along with the highway, almost all the other major roads remained blocked in Mandi district on Monday.According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), a total of 259 roads were blocked throughout the state on Monday.
