Jammu- Defying fear in the wake of the horrific April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, hundreds of Amarnath Yatra pilgrims from across the country lined up at the Saraswati Dham registration centre in Jammu on the first day of offline registration, many choosing to take the Pahalgam route as an act of tribute and resistance. "Bullets and bombs cannot stop us from having Baba Barfani's darshan," said Devakar Kadam, a Mumbai resident embarking on his 11th pilgrimage. "We will never bow to fear. This time, we walk for those who were killed in Pahalgam." The terror attack in April had left 26 people, mostly tourists, dead in a targeted assault allegedly based on religious profiling. But instead of casting a shadow, the tragedy appears to have ignited a deeper resolve among pilgrims. At the Jammu registration centre near the railway station, chants of "Bam Bam Bole" and "Jai Baba Barfani" echoed as long queues formed. Many pilgrims insisted on taking the traditional 48-km Pahalgam route, despite it being longer and more arduous than the Baltal track, to honour those killed in the attack. "This time, the yatra is more than just a pilgrimage -- it's a message to terrorists that we are not afraid," said Mumta Deshmukh, who had traveled overnight to be part of the first batch. The 38-day Yatra to the 3,880-metre-high Amarnath cave shrine will officially begin on July 3 via the twin tracks -- Nunwan-Pahalgam in Anantnag and Baltal in Ganderbal. The first batch will depart from the Jammu-based Bhagwati Nagar base camp on July 2. Authorities have made elaborate security arrangements along both routes. Yet for many yatris, especially those arriving from states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Assam, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh, the emotional weight of choosing Pahalgam is overriding any concern about safety. "This will be our tribute to the martyrs of April 22," said Sarita Ghosh from Kolkata, part of a 95-member group. "By walking through Pahalgam, we are reclaiming the space from fear." Some pilgrims, however, expressed frustration over the limited daily quota of 2,000 tokens for on-the-spot registration. Many had queued for hours, only to be turned away.
