New Delhi: Delhi govt has planned to start a DTC inter-state, electric bus service to 17 cities across six states, senior officials have said.Transport minister Pankaj Singh recently approved the proposal during a board meeting that would allow DTC buses to operate beyond NCR.The places that the buses will travel to include five cities in Uttarakhand that include Rishikesh, Haridwar and Dehradun; five cities in Uttar Pradesh that include Ayodhya, Lucknow and Moradabad; three in Rajasthan that include Alwar, Bikaner and Jaipur; three in Punjab -- Amritsar, Patiala and Chandigarh -- and one each in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir, which are Panipat and Jammu.Officials said that minister Singh has ordered that only electric buses be used to promote green mobility. He said that these routes were proposed by the DTC board in a recent meeting, and the department has started the process of purchasing the buses and coordinating with other states to start the service.After more than two decades, Delhi govt is going to restart the inter-state bus service with 100 electric buses, he said. Officials said that during a recent board meeting, the department also used previous records as a basis for determining the routes. Until 2004, DTC buses had an inter-state service. However, after the conversion from diesel to CNG, the service gradually began to shut down. After the complete transition to CNG in 2010, the service was completely stopped because other states did not have CNG facilities. A senior official said that buses are being purchased separately for the inter-state service. "These buses will be 12 metres long, be fully electric and air-conditioned. Unlike the ones we use for city services, these buses would be more premium as people would be using them for long distances," he said. He said that once the buses start arriving, the service would be given the green signal. "These buses will have comfortable seats and app-based ticketing for commuters travelling between the national capital, NCR cities, and neighbouring states," he said.A DTC official said the corporation's inter-state services used to be popular, and most commuters preferred them over buses of other state transport corporations. At the time, DTC buses connected Delhi to Jaipur, Chandigarh, Udaipur, Shimla, Hardwar, Chamba, Dharamsala, Ganganagar and Pathankot. Another official said: "The buses will be equipped with CCTV cameras, GPS and panic buttons, providing convenient and safer travel for long-distance commuters."The service is also aimed at encouraging people with cars to opt for public transport. "The plan is to run AC premium buses for those who can afford slightly higher fares," said the official.Officials said the rates have not been decided but DTC buses are mostly cheaper than private operators.
