Mumbai: In a major boost to sustainable transportation and revenue generation, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is set to establish the state's largest Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) on its own land through a public-private partnership model. The facility will be located in Khultabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, on a sprawling 100-acre MSRTC-owned parcel. The announcement was made by Maharashtra's Transport Minister and MSRTC Chairman Pratap Sarnaik during a review meeting held recently. The meeting was attended by MSRTC Vice Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Madhav Kusekar, along with departmental heads. "This project will not only support scientific vehicle disposal but will also open up a sustainable new revenue stream for MSRTC," said Sarnaik. He added that the initiative aligns with the Centre's 2021 vehicle scrapping policy, which mandates systematic dismantling of vehicles over 15 years old to ensure safe and environmentally friendly disposal. Under the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) guidelines, Maharashtra adopted the scrapping policy in 2023. MSRTC has now been granted permission to set up vehicle scrapping facilities at three locations across the state. The Khultabad facility will be the first and the largest among them. Currently, eight authorised RVSFs operate across Maharashtra, each scrapping a minimum of 1,000 vehicles annually. The new facility, expected to be the state's biggest, will significantly increase scrapping capacity and is projected to become a key income generator for the transport body. As the Transport Department, which oversees the authorisation of such centers, also comes under his ministry, Sarnaik assured that the necessary approvals for the project will be expedited. The review meeting also discussed policies for staff recruitment, transfers, promotions, and the procurement of new vehicles, indicating a broader modernisation and reform agenda for MSRTC.
