Kolkata: The Election Commission has issued show-cause notices to eight minor political parties in Bengal for failure to submit mandatory returns. This week, the poll body has initiated proceedings to remove 345 recognised unregistered political parties (RUPPs) from its list, out of 2,800 RUPPs nationwide, due to their failure to meet the essential criteria for maintaining their status.An EC official said that numerous parties had been electorally inactive for extended periods, whilst others were untraceable. Additionally, several parties had failed to submit tax returns and donation details.A communication from the EC to Bengal's chief electoral officer on Thursday noted that eight parties had been politically inactive since 2019. Show-cause notices were sent to All India Tafsil United Party, Banchita Swaraj Party, Bangla Bikashbadi Congress, Bharatiya New Democratic Party, Democratic Socialist Party (Prabodh Chandra), Indian Democratic Congress, Indian People's Forward Bloc and Mulnibasi Party of India. The CEO must conduct hearings with party representatives and submit recommendations within a month.Former IPS officer Nazrul Islam, a senior official of Mulnibasi Party of India, said, "The party higher-ups might not have submitted the compliances to the EC, but we will do it soon."
