Chandigarh, Jun 27 (PTI) The mother of jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and another person accompanying her died after being shot at by unidentified bike-borne people in Punjab's Batala, police said on Friday. Harjit Kaur was critically injured after the incident around 9:30 pm on Thursday and was referred to a hospital in Amritsar, but she succumbed to the bullet injuries, a senior police official from Batala said over the phone. The incident took place on Qadian road which falls under the Civil Lines area. "Unidentified bike-borne persons opened fire when Harjit Kaur and another person Karanvir Singh were in the car," Deputy Superintendent of Police, Batala, Paramveer Singh said. The DSP said Karanvir was declared dead at the Batala Civil hospital. The attackers fled from the spot and efforts are on to nab them, he added. The DSP said a case has been registered and teams have been formed to nab the killers. "We are investigating the motive behind the incident," he said. Both the victims sustained bullet injuries on face, chest, and stomach, officials said. Harjit Kaur, who hails from Bhagwanpur, was earlier elected as a member of village panchayat. In March, jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria had been detained under the PIT-NDPS Act and shifted from central jail in Bathinda to Assam's Silchar jail. Itanagar, Jun 7 (PTI) The flood situation in Arunachal Pradesh improved on Saturday with water levels of most rivers receding, even as 33,000 people in 24 districts remained affected, officials said.
