Guwahati: Several areas like GS Road, Bamunimaidam, Gorchuk and Chandmari were inundated after a brief but intense spell of rain in the city on Thursday afternoon that lasted for about an hour.On Wednesday, housing and urban affairs minister Jayanta Mallabaruah had announced the installation of eco-blocks and construction of new drainage lines to tackle wasterlogging. "Waterlogging in my area is not a new thing. Today, even after a brief spell of rain, the roads are under water. This situation simply highlights the inefficient drainage system," said Simran Chetry, a resident of Gorchuk. Jigyashree Sarmah, who was stuck at Chandmari due to waterlogged roads, said, "I was stuck for around 30 minutes, and it is so annoying that it rained only for around an hour." As per Met office records, Guwahati Airport recorded 1.4 cm of rainfall between 1:45 pm and 2:30 pm, whereas Ulubari recorded 3.1 cm of rain between 2 pm and 3 pm. Hengerabari recorded 2.6 cm of rain between 2 pm and 3 pm, IIT Guwahati recorded 3 cm between 2 pm and 3 pm, and Sarusajai recorded 2.1 cm during the same period. "It was intense rainfall for an hour resulting in waterlogging," said an IMD official. For the next 24 hours, the Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD issued a forecast of a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers over Guwahati where maximum and minimum temperatures are most likely to be 35°C and 27°C, respectively, on Friday. For the northeast, the IMD predicted that moderate rain is very likely to occur at many places over Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram, and light to moderate rain is very likely to occur at a few places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Tripura on Friday. The maximum temperature is likely to be above normal by 2 to 3 degrees in some places over the region, the Met office said.
