It has recorded 548.2mm of rainfall so far against the monthly average of 542.3mm. The Santacruz observatory, which typically receives more rainfall and is considered Mumbai's benchmark, has logged 478.9mm of its June average of 537.1mm.Island city saw multiple triple-digit rain days this month. Despite a dry spell at the start of the month, the Colaba observatory recorded 100.4mm of rain on June 15-16. This was followed by consistent rainfall on June 18-19, with the weather station logging 142.6mm in a single day -- the second highest 24-hour rainfall in seven years.Minister Ashish Shelar said in light of increasingly intense rain events, the city will soon have a new drainage master plan to manage rainfall in excess of 100mm per hour. "Mumbai's current stormwater drainage system is designed to handle rainfall of up to 55mm per hour," he said after chairing a meeting on flood situations and drainage measures. Shelar said a draft plan on flood mitigation measures prepared by BMC is currently under review by an expert panel from IIT. As per BMC data, the city receives heavy rainfall on 16-20 days annually on an average, with more than 100mm in an hour on some of these days. There's a yellow alert in place for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and adjoining areas from Friday till June 30, with heavy rainfall being forecast at isolated places. An orange alert, indicating heavy to very heavy rain, has been issued for isolated places in Raigad district for Friday as well as for June 29-30.With constant rain in Thane and Palghar, the stock in the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai rose to 36% on Thursday, the highest for the date in three years. On June 26 last year, the lake levels stood at just 5.3%, and at 6.6% the year before that. Officials from BMC's hydraulics department said in the last 10 years, the lake levels were comparably high (31.1%) only on June 26, 2017. (With agency inputs)
