Chandigarh: Congress high command has accepted the resignations of Bharat Bhushan Ashu as working president of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, and Pargat Singh and Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon as the vice-presidents of the state unit, after the party's defeat in the just concluded Ludhiana West byelection. Bupesh Baghel, AICC incharge of the party's Punjab affairs, took to X Thursday evening to convey the party's decision. He wrote, "The party expresses its gratitude for the services of all three leaders in their respective roles and wishes them a bright future." After losing to Aam Aadmi Party candidate and MP Sanjeev Arora by over 10,000 votes, Ashu quit taking moral responsibility for the defeat. Pargat Singh and Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon followed suit and resigned from their respective posts in the party. The bypoll brought to the fore the perennial infighting in Punjab Congress. The state's Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, LoP Partap Singh Bajwa, and some other party leaders largely stayed away from active campaigning in the constituency. Ashu's campaign was mainly anchored by party leaders -- MP (Jalandhar) and former CM Charanjit Singh Channi, MLAs (Kapurthala) Rana Gurjeet Singh and Pargat Singh (Jalandhar cantonment). Kushaldeep Singh Dhillon, the party MLA from Faridkot, who is also considered close to Ashu, also canvassed for him. Ashu was conspicuous by his absence during a press conference called in Ludhiana on June 16 by Baghel, Warring, and Bajwa during the bypoll. A senior party leader from Punjab Congress, requesting anonymity, said this was seen as "a high degree of indiscipline by someone who was contesting on the party symbol and not being present in the press conference held by Punjab affairs in charge, state president, and the LoP." The Congress leader said Ashu also inducted a Ludhiana leader, Kamaljit Singh Karwal, into the party fold without taking Warring into confidence. This, too, was seen as "an act of indiscipline." Notably, Warring, on the other hand, re-inducted into the party fold the suspended party MLA from Phillaur assembly seat, Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary, who has been at loggerheads with Ashu's staunch supporter Channi after the latter was fielded from Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat, for which the Chaudhary family was staking a claim to contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
