KOLKATA - The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Arun Dey, 50, near Kolkata on Thursday in connection with the 2021 murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker Abhijit Sarkar. The arrest marks a critically important advancement in the ongoing investigation into post-election violence in West Bengal. Dey was apprehended in Teghoria and subsequently presented before a local court. He will remain in judicial custody until July 4. Biswasjit Sarkar, the brother of the deceased, recounted the gruesome details of the crime. He said a mob attacked Abhijit, dragging him after tying a television wire around his neck and smashing his head with a stone. Biswasjit Sarkar identified Dey as the individual who tied the wire. The initial police report filed by Biswasjit Sarkar named 20 individuals. To date, the CBI has arrested 15 people in connection with the Abhijit Sarkar murder case.
