Thiruvananthapuram: A survey conducted by Association of Medical and Paediatric Oncologists of Kerala (AMPOK) revealed a nuanced picture of cancer awareness in Kerala. A significant 90% of respondents reported some level of awareness about common cancer symptoms and approximately 80% felt confident in identifying early signs. Furthermore, 84% expressed concern about their personal risk of developing cancer. Survey was conducted among 2,443 people above the age of 18 years across the state.Nearly 57% confidently identified unhealthy lifestyle habits as cancer contributors, with an additional 36% believing in their influence. Close to 90% recognized smoking as a causative factor for cancer, and nearly 73% acknowledged role of alcohol consumption. A strong majority (91%) perceived a moderate to strong link between tobacco or alcohol use and cancer risk.Announcing findings of the survey on Thursday, AMPOK chairman Dr Aju Mathew said, "The survey provides vital insights into the landscape of cancer awareness in Kerala. While we are encouraged by high general awareness, significant gaps in knowledge about specific preventive measures like vaccination and genetic testing, coupled with alarmingly low screening rates, demand immediate attention.""A crucial finding highlighted that 61% of participants believed that portrayal of tobacco and alcohol use by sportspersons and celebrities negatively influences young people to adopt these habits. This underscores the powerful impact of cultural icons on public health behaviours," he said.Alarmingly, 80% of respondents reported never having undergone cancer screening, highlighting a significant gap between awareness and preventive action. Despite high general awareness, several myths persisted. Eighteen per cent incorrectly associated mobile phone use with cancer, and 25% mistakenly linked safe pesticide use to cancer risk.Survey also revealed concerns about treatment. Financial costs were a primary concern for 73% of respondents regarding cancer treatment, while 38% worried about effectiveness and nearly 50% about side effects. Only 15% believed vaccines could prevent certain cancers, and a mere 29% were aware of genetic testing's role in prevention and early detection. Optimistically, only 17% viewed a cancer diagnosis as invariably fatal, and 66% believed there was no stigma associated with cancer in their communities.
