TV as a service is coming to the Indian market which allows you to pay for the big screen and apps with one plan. Most people now like to buy smart TVs and use their favorite streaming apps on the big screen. But the whole aspect of buying different plans for each platform and you have to keep spending on them monthly can be a costly affair. That's where Streambox is looking to become the Roku of India by giving you a packaged deal that not only includes a slew of apps but also the TV that comes along with them. Dor TV is a first-of-its-kind service in the country from the company that has some solid industry backing and offers popular OTT apps on a single monthly subscription. Micromax is one of the companies backing this service, and the company's co-founder Rahul Sharma was there at the launch event on Tuesday to showcase the offerings and the product. The Streambox service basically includes the whole package. You get a 43-inch, 50-inch or a 65-inch 4K TV with the monthly fee starting from Rs 799. You are looking at a TV subscription model that bundles around 24 apps like Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video and JioCinema among others. That's not all, you get access to 300+ Live TV channels working through these streaming apps on the big screen. The company is also in talks with Netflix to bring the platform to its bundled service. More importantly, you can own the TV for less than Rs 20,000 after 12 months of the subscription. The company has even developed its own Dor OS which is based on Android Open Source Project (AOSP) but has its own apps store where you can find all the popular apps. The Dor TV service will start with the 43-inch 4K TV from December 1 and you have to pay Rs 9,999 as the one-time activation cost. For the rest of the 11 months in the year, the consumer will be charged Rs 799 per month, which gives them an account on Dor TV to use all these apps with a single sign-on. The company claims that out of the 210 million TV units in Indian households, a staggering 70 percent of them are still non-smart TV. And Streambox feels that a Dor-like TV service could be the ideal way to make them upgrade their big screen with all the bells and whistles without burning a hole in their pocket. The 55-inch and 65-inch models in the service will be available from early next year.
