Chennai: Once seen as a fix for T Nagar's traffic chaos, the 40-crore multi-level parking facility now stands as a symbol of poor planning and apathy. Two-wheelers still flood the plaza despite free parking made available at the facility.Following a TOI article, traffic police teams cleared illegal bike and parking from the T Nagar Pedestrian Plaza on Saturday. However, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has failed to address a critical flaw -- the multi-level parking facility meant to decongest the area remains underused and partly dysfunctional. It was inaugurated in 2021 by the then chief minister Edapaddi K Palanisami.It has been designed to house 222 cars and 513 two-wheelers and the charges were 5 per hour for bikes and 20 per hour for cars. There are three lifts for cars and one for bike. However, for the past eight months, a company has been operating the facility on a temporary basis, offering parking free of cost for the first three hours.Bikes can be parked in Basements 1 and 2, as well as on the terrace, with one lift available for two-wheelers. Car parking spans six floors, with each level accommodating 37 cars. However, two of the three car elevators have been dysfunctional for months. With long queues for the only working lift, most car owners avoid the facility," said a GCC official.As a result, despite offering free parking for the first three hours, the facility remains largely unused. "The bike lift also does not work and no one comes to park in the basement. Most two-wheeler riders continue to park illegally on the plaza.Residents point out that there is a need to increase the on-street parking charges to 200 per hour so that people start using the multi-level car parking. "Though opened with much fanfare, the multilevel parking complex in Pondy bazaar is a drain on the public exchequer. The GCC has to take the full blame for the parking complex remaining not used for the purpose it was built at enormous cost," said V S Jayaraman, T Nagar Residents Welfare Association."Shoppers should be warned that if vehicles are parked elsewhere obstructing the free flow of traffic, hefty fines would be slapped. Also GCC should not allow parking on both sides of the road leading to Pondy bazaar," he added.Kumar, deputy commissioner, Traffic (South) said that a joint meeting with GCC officials is scheduled to address the issue. A GCC official said that the issue will be fixed soon. Senior officials were not reachable for comment.
