New Delhi: A nine-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered in northeast Delhi's Dayalpur on Saturday, police have said. She was found in a suitcase, barely breathing, and died later.Police said that the suspect a neighbour, who is currently on the run.Cops got a PCR call at 8.41pm on Saturday regarding the sexual assault on the girl. On reaching the spot, the Dayalpur police team learned the girl had been taken to a hospital by her father. She was in an unconscious state and was declared brought dead at the hospital.A senior police officer said that doctors at the hospital observed visible injuries to her face and suspected sexual assault. The crime and forensics teams have inspected the spot."A tragic incident of rape and murder of a minor girl has taken place in police station Dayalpur, north-east Delhi," DCP, north-east, Ashish Kumar Mishra, said in a social media post on X. "The deceased and the accused belong to the same community; the accused lives near the deceased's house and is still absconding. All the teams of Delhi police are working determinedly for strong action." Police said that the girl left her home around 7pm on Saturday to take ice to her grandmother who lived about 20 houses away. Her mother said that she had asked the daughter to run the errand before heading to a relative's house for dinner. Initially, the mother wasn't concerned as her daughter typically returned quickly. However, when 20 minutes passed and there was no sign of her, the woman called her mother, who said the girl had not arrived at her home.The family began searching the neighbourhood. According to the girl's mother, neighbours reported seeing her go up a five-storey building about 7-8 houses away. The girl's 45-year-old uncle said that they were then told by a neighbour that a man living on the second floor of that building had dropped his keys and asked a few local children to bring them upstairs. "No one had helped him at the time, but maybe she did," he said.Upon investigating, they found the man outside his second-floor apartment, which was locked from the outside. "When we asked if she was inside, he denied any knowledge of her whereabouts, even confidently suggesting that we can check the premises, but then claimed he didn't have the keys," he said.The family grew suspicious and insisted on checking inside the man's house, police said. The man offered to retrieve keys from another residence, and the girl's 12-year-old cousin accompanied him. However, when neither returned promptly, the family decided to break the lock themselves.Inside, they found a suitcase. "When we opened it, we were shocked to find our girl stuffed inside, barely breathing," the uncle said. The family said they rushed the girl from one hospital to another in desperation, but she ultimately did not survive.The street where both the accused and the victim live has limited CCTV coverage with only a few cameras installed by residents ahead of the building where the girl was found. A case under sections 103 (murder), 66 (punishment for causing death or resulting in persistent vegetative state of victim) and 6 of the POCSO Act has been registered.The area saw a heavy security deployment. Roads were barricaded.
