Mangaluru: Various organisations have joined hands to organise a mass blood donation camp in memory of slain pickup driver Abdul Rahiman at Kolthamajalu, Bantwal. Blood Donors Mangaluru, a non-profit organisation, took initiatives in association with GHM Foundation Mullarapatna, Muhiuddin Juma Masjid Kolthamajalu, and SKSSF Kolthamajalu branch to hold the blood camp in memory of Abdul Rahiman at the Madrasa Auditorium in Kolthamajalu on Sunday.Blood Donors Mangaluru president Siddiq Manjeshwar told TOI that the forum decided on a camp in memory of Rahiman as he was actively involved in blood donation and other social service activities in his village. He said that nearly 200 donors registered in advance to take part in the camp, which was held with the support of Yenepoya Hospital."Abdul Rahiman, a dedicated social worker and blood donor, provided assistance to individuals regardless of their background. His charitable activities extended across all communities, transcending religious and caste boundaries. Hence, we decided to hold a camp to commemorate his social services. We have been holding blood donation camps through most of the hospitals and medical colleges in the coastal region. Our group also held camps in UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain," Siddiq said.On the demand for blood in the district, he said that there is a huge requirement in hospitals and medical colleges in the district. "Blood donation camps help hospitals to cater required blood to patients. There is a need for awareness to be created among youth to come forward to donate blood. The majority of those who donate blood at present are repeaters, and they have to wait for three months after each donation. In the past 13 years, Blood Donors Mangaluru organised more than 500 blood donation camps. Blood donation camps typically yield around 100 units per session, with some events attracting as many as 400 participants donating blood," he said.
