Ludhiana: Hours after Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Congress candidate for Ludhiana West byelection, received Vigilance Bureau (VB) summons in a cheating and forgery case, Ludhiana VB SSP Jagatpreet Singh was on Friday suspended for "grave misconduct and dereliction of duty''. Reacting to this, the Congress leader said it was a bid by "frustrated" Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to intimidate party cadres and hinder his poll campaign.While the leaders of AAP claimed that Ashu, in connivance with the SSP, had got the summons issued to gain sympathy, the Congress leaders termed it a conspiracy, releasing a photograph of the SSP attending a meeting of AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora. Ashu further alleged that the SSP was suspended probably because the govt's move backfired, or the SSP refused to arrest him.Referring to the developments, Ashu, who is also working president of Congress party, said, "For the past two-three days, I have been hearing about a message having been circulated in all 28 police stations of Ludhiana Commissionerate to find even an old complainant against me, if any. Suddenly, on Thursday at around 9.30 pm, the VB sent summons to my house when I was busy campaigning. The family member who was present at home told them that I would join after June 19. Today morning, they suspended the SSP because their attempt to implicate me backfired. A few days ago, our leaders and workers were "implicated" on old complaints, all with an intention to derail my campaign."Ashu added, "They only wanted to arrest me to scare away our workers from campaigning. Is it even possible that an SSP could issue summons to a candidate without the permission of his seniors? I will again ask why former CP Kuldeep Singh Chahal was transferred from Ludhiana."On AAP's allegations that he had got the summons issued to himself for political gain and sympathy with the help of 'his old acquaintance' SSP Jagatpreet Singh, Ashu retorted: "Am I so powerful even in the opposition that I made an SSP issue summons to me?" He said that everyone knows why he was issued the summons amid the election campaign.Dismissive of the whole 'conspiracy', Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh said there was nothing surprising in what the AAP govt tried to do.
