India cenbank cuts banks' cash reserve ratio to boost rate cut transmission

MUMBAI, June 6 (Reuters) - India's central bank on Friday, in a surprise move, cut the cash reserve ratio (CRR), which banks are required to hold, by 100 basis points to 3% with an aim to accelerate policy transmission and boost lending. CRR is the proportion of deposits that banks need to set aside as cash. The cut would be done in four equal tranches staring from September to November and would release 2.5 trillion rupees ($29.13 billion) in the banking system, Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra said. Earlier, the RBI's Monetary Policy Committee cut its key repo rate by a larger-than-expected 50 basis points, a third consecutive reduction, as muted inflation provided space for policymakers to focus on supporting economic growth. "A sharper than expected growth slowdown in Q2 has tilted risks to our outlook of 6.8 per cent for the current fiscal downwards," said DK Joshi, chief economist, Crisil. ...Read More >
