Kolkata, April 9 (UNI) In the face of persistent TMC jibes taunting the BJP for being opposed to Bengali food habits and that once BJP came to power, it would impose restrictions on fish habits, Prime Minister Narendra Modi countered the charge highlighting his government's push for fisheries at Haldia rally on Thursday. Addressing the Bijoy Sankalpa Sabha in Haldia in East Midanpore, Modi asserted that the BJP is not against fish consumption. "We are actively working to boost fish production and fishermen's livelihoods," he said. "There is immense potential for fish culture in East Midnapore, but the state is still not self-sufficient. This is the result of TMC's corruption," he said. "In the last 11 years, fish production in the country has doubled. But in Bengal, because of the TMC government, this progress has stalled." He pointed to BJP and NDA-ruled states as examples, saying, "In Bihar, fish production has doubled and they no longer need to import. Assam has also become self-sufficient. Wherever there is a BJP government, fish production has increased," said the PM. The Prime Minister argued that Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), a flagship scheme launched in 2020 to modernise fisheries infrastructure has increased the fish production output in the country. "Because this scheme has 'PM' in its name, TMC has a problem with it. They are not allowing its full implementation in Bengal. But who is suffering? The common people," Modi said. The Prime Minister, pitching for a "double-engine government," said, "Once BJP comes to power, Central schemes will be fully implemented, and Bengal will become self-sufficient in fish and seafood." He also promised to transform Haldia port into a "blue economy zone" and highlighted measures like increased budget allocation and Kisan Credit Cards for fishermen.
