Imphal: The Manipur government enforced an indefinite curfew on Tuesday in five valley districts, including Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Thoubal, citing growing security worries. District magistrates of the respective areas issued immediate orders preventing people from leaving their homes until further notice. Officials said the measures are essential to avoid further unrest and ensure public safety. Alongside the curfew, authorities temporarily cut off internet and mobile data services in these districts for three days starting from 2 pm on April 7. The restriction covers mobile data, broadband, VSAT, and VPN networks. A Home Department notification, under the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024, said the action was meant to stop misuse of social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and X to spread provocative messages, hate posts, or false news. The government added that these measures aim to reduce misinformation and prevent gatherings or coordination that could lead to violence, property damage, or arson. The order said the restrictions were necessary to protect lives and maintain peace in the community. Officials noted the curfew and internet suspension are set for three days, subject to extension if required, with certain exceptions allowed. The emergency order was issued ex parte, and violations will face strict legal consequences. The curfew and internet restrictions come after a tragic attack in Bishnupur early Tuesday, when a suspected militant detonated an explosive at a house in Moirang Tronglaobi, killing two children and injuring their mother. The victims included a five-year-old boy and a six-month-old infant girl.
